Minecraft is full of rare mobs, structures, biomes, items and blocks – but which are the rarest, and most importantly, where can you find them?
Emerald Ore
This rare form of emerald only appears in the mountain’s biome and its variants. As of version 1.17, it can appear in the top 220 levels of the map, so you can find it high up in the mountains or relatively far below the surface. Each block will drop one emerald when broken using an iron, diamond or Netherite pickaxe.
Ocean Monuments
Found in the deep ocean biome only, monuments are huge underwater fortresses. The easiest way to find them is to use an ocean explorer map, which will lead you straight to one, but the real rarities are their unusual blocks – as well as prismarine, of which they are made, you can collect prismarine lanterns and sponges, both of which are impossible to get elsewhere.
Strongholds
Almost impossible to find without help, strongholds are vast underground fortresses, which contain tonnes of loot and a direct portal to the End – the only way you can make it there! Locating strongholds is difficult – you have to craft eyes of ender (blaze powder and an ender pearl), then throw them, taking note of the direction they fly. Keep following the trails until they start hovering in mid-air, then dig down to reach the start of a stronghold.
Brown Mooshrooms
The only way to find this ultra-rare mob is to be on the lookout! Mooshrooms only spawn in the mushroom plains biome, and a brown mushroom only spawns when a normal one is struck by lightning! You can find one eventually if you hang around a mushroom plains island when there is a storm, though if you have a trident with Channelling, you can use that to make your own! Feed them flowers and milk them with a bowl to obtain suspicious stew.
Nether Star
One of the rarest drops, a Nether star can only be picked up by killing the wither, which is no small feat! If you can manage it, you can use it to craft a beacon block. The good news is that Nether stars cannot be destroyed by explosions and take five minutes to despawn, so if you kill a wither, you practically cannot miss it.
Geodes
You can only find them in version 1.17 onwards, but geodes aren’t easy to spot – unless you know what you are looking for! Most of the time they are buried deep underground, but occasionally you will see one sticking out of the ocean floor or protruding above the desert. You can find them anywhere between sea level and the bedrock layer, so keep your eyes peeled for that tell-tale layer of smooth basalt.
Mob Heads
There are five mob heads – the dragon head, which you collect from End ships, wither skeleton skulls, which are dropped by wither skeletons, then creeper heads, skeleton skulls and zombie heads, which are only dropped by the relevant mob when they are killed by a charged creeper! Charged creepers only appear when a creeper is struck by lightning, so they are also pretty rare – if you spot one, try to lure it somewhere it can take out a mob or two when it blows up!
