Ladders
With a ladder, you will be able to climb up any cliff. While you have the ladder equipped, you can press A near a cliff to climb up or descend. This tool is the only way you have of reaching the top of cliffs until you gain the ability to build inclines.
These cliffs are a distinct habitat from the land below, with its own plants and wildlife that can only be found at their peak. Most notably, you will always find cedar trees and local flowers that will be essential in certain key DIY recipes. With this tool, you are really going places.
You will need to gather flowers from atop your island’s cliffs to make some of the items needed during the ‘three new plots’ quest, so Tom Nook will send you the recipe you need to create your very own ladder.
Vaulting Pole
The vaulting pole is used for crossing rivers and other narrow bodies of water. To use the vaulting pole, simply equip it and press A near the water to propel yourself to the other side.
It is an essential tool for exploring your island before you have gained the ability to build bridges. Although your vaulting pole cannot break, be careful not to lose it once you are on the other side or you may need to call upon the Rescue Service app to get back home.
You don’t need to perfectly line up your vaulting pole, just heading in the right general direction will get you across safely.
Wands
Wands are magical items that you can craft in a large number of styles. These function much like the Tool ring, but for clothes – once you have a wand by pressing A, you will be able to quickly swap any outfit you have registered. To register an outfit, you will need to visit a wardrobe of any kind and select ‘Edit wand outfits’. Here, you can swap clothes to craft a brand-new look from whatever clothing you have on your person as well as in storage or opt to register the clothes you are currently wearing as an outfit of its own.
After you have chosen your outfit, you can also change the image representing it to make it easier to distinguish. Many normal clothing options, such as the standard wardrobe menu and the Able Sisters’ fitting room, are unavailable while you are under the effects of the wand, so be sure to dispel it before you enter. You can do this by pressing A to wave the wand and pressing X to revert back to your original outfit.
Every time you swap to another registered outfit, the clothes you were previously wearing will be stored in the wand, allowing you to have a huge wardrobe on the fly without cluttering your inventory. If you lose a wand, don’t worry about your clothes – once a set of clothing has been registered, it will be accessible with any other wand.
This also means you only ever need to carry around a single wand at a time, as they will all function the same and offer you the same outfits regardless. There are many wands to collect, but they all function identically.
