As if improving your Heroes, schematics and Survivors wasn’t enough, Save the World also expects you to manage and enhance your gear. One the one hand, you have gadgets – the always useful gizmos that you can use to call in air strikes, slow down the Husks or teleport from place to place. On the other, you have tools, which cover everything from your pickaxe and your backpack to your ability to repair damaged walls or boost your buildings’ health. The more you upgrade them, the better they will get, but with only so many upgrade points to work with, you must make darn sure you are not wasting them on the wrong things.
How To Get Upgrade Points
By levelling up! Keep earning XP and gaining levels, and you will be rewarded with more upgrade points every few levels. You can then splash out on new and improved tools and gadgets.
How To Spend Them
Head to the upgrades section of the command centre menu and you will find Kevin ready to help you spend your points.
Upgrades is divided into two pages – gadgets and tools – and you will need to spread the same points across both. It is tempting to spend all of them on bigger, better gadgets, but if you do you are going to regret it.
Under gadgets, you will find the Air Strike gadget you used in the first tutorial mission, along with the Adrenaline Rush healing gadget, the Hover Turret, the Proximity Mine, the Banner, the Slow Field, the Supply Crate and the Teleporter. The descriptions and videos make it clear what each one does, and you will also get an explanation of what bonuses the next upgrade will bring for you.
Under Tools, you will see options to beef up your pickaxe and get a bigger backpack, but also options to upgrade your storage, boost building health and repairs speeds, and get more storage in the Storm Shield.
Select a tool or gadget and you will see how many upgrade points it will cost you to get the next upgrade. Just click Upgrade to spend them and unlock it. However, most upgrades won’t become available until you hit a specific level, you can’t get the upgrade – even if you have a pocket full of points.
Hit the Preview Upgrades button and you can also preview future upgrades – handy if you are thinking long term and want to see how powerful a gadget might become further down the line.
What Should You Spend Them On?
Well, there aren’t any hard and fast answers, but points are scarce, and you can only pack two gadgets at a time, so it makes sense to concentrate on those you use most often. In the early stages of the game, many players rely on Air Strike. It makes a lot of noise and kills a ton of weedy Husks at once. Sure, it looks cool, but it is the rookie’s choice.
Carry on playing and you will find you rely more on the Hover Turret, the Slow Field and the Banner, so we would say focus on those first. Adrenaline Rush can also be useful for a quick heal early on, though it doesn’t heal enough damage to make it worth using past the Plankerton stages.
What About Those Tools?
It is well worth upgrading the pickaxe and sorting out building health and repair speed, but don’t forget your storage. Storm Shield storage is very handy when you are collecting materials for defence missions, and it is a real hassle to constantly manage new cards because you keep running out of Storm Shield space. The same goes for collecting and crafting materials and keeping weapons in your backpack. Spend some points on storage or you will find the lack of space gets really frustrating.
As a rule, stick up upgrading two or three gadgets, but remember to keep all your tools upgraded when you get the chance. You will need them at their best.
