Like any skilled plumber, Mario has mastered the arts of Goomba-stomping, platform-hopping and Koopa shell-kicking. Here is a quick refresher course for non-tradesmen.
Jumping and Attacking
Despite his girth, Mario is quite nimble. You can leap wide gaps and land with precise accuracy by pressing left or right to vary the distance in mid-air.
You can jump slightly farther and higher if you are dashing, or by pressing both the run and jump buttons together to do a long jump. But beware – the farther you jump, the farther you will skid when you land.
Attack from Above
Jumping on top of certain enemies will damage or destroy them. You can chain a series of stomp attacks by bouncing from foe to foe, and you will rack up points and earn extra lives for the trouble. However, some foes are invulnerable to stomp attacks and will damage you instead.
Attack from Below
When you jump into a block above you, you will knock free any coins or items hidden within it, and also damage any foes standing on that block. If you are Super Mario or any other large version of Mario, your strength may shatter the block completely.
Throwing Shells
Some foes can be used as weapons. For example, Koopas retreat into their shells when stomped, and you can pick them up by holding the dash button. Release the button to throw the shell at does or kick it into items such as Star Coins to claim them from a distance.
Swimming
Mario can hold his breath indefinitely underwater and is a more than capable swimmer. Dodge enemies and hit blocks by pressing the jump button to do a quick paddle that propels Mario upward. But beware – you cannot damage foes underwater unless you are Fire Mario.
Climbing and Swinging
You can have Mario climb objects such as vines and fences by pressing up or down in front of them. You can leap onto loose-hanging ropes and poles in the same manner and pressing left and right will then start them swinging. Jump at the apex of their arc to leap a great distance.
Dashing
To run faster, hold the dash button down while moving left or right. This will let you traverse long distances quickly and provide a running start for longer jumps.
Crouching
Press down on the Control Pad to crouch, allowing Super Mario (and other large versions) to duck under enemies and squeeze through tight spots.
